40% Of Women Have Hair Loss!

By Amy May

As we age, many of us - men and women - will start to experience thinning hair. This is because some follicles naturally shut down over time and gradually stop growing hair. Whether this happens to you is determined by your genes. You may begin to notice finer hair being produced on the top of your head where your hair was once quite thick.

Menopause and Hair Loss
Menopause is something that happens to all women as they get older. It is a natural and normal occurrence. Menopause is when a woman has not had a menstrual period for a full year. It marks both the end of menstruation and the end of a womans ability to naturally conceive a child.

When you think of someone balding, you think of a man. But women lose their hair, too. In fact, there are just as many women as there are men who have hair loss. Menopauses shifting landscape of hormones may make it worse.

About 40 percent of women by age 40 have some hair loss, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Hair loss can begin for women as early as age 20. Hair loss accelerates during menopause.

Lifestyle Changes to Prevent Hair Loss
Nutritional therapy - hair health requires good nutrition with enough iron, vitamin C, B vitamins (especially biotin) and essential fatty acids. These nutrients can help to reduce hair loss and promote healthy growth. Supplements of zinc and silica can also help, as can the amino acid lysine, which helps promote good circulation.

Dietary change - eating more protein can reduce hair loss. Protein can be obtained from pulses, soya products, wholegrains, dairy produce, eggs, meat and fish. Increasing intake of citrus fruits, berries and green vegetables will boost vitamin C and aid circulation.

Tips and tricks to prevent Hair Loss
1. Check your diet: nutrition plays a key role in maintaining a healthy mane. Lack of balance and deficiency in one area can accelerate the onset of hereditary hair loss. Consult your doctor or nutritionist for advice. 2. Steer clear of hairstyles that put tension on the hair follicles, such as tight ponytails, chignons and plaits. Think loose and comfortable. 3. Layered cuts can make a big difference in creating the illusion of more oomph! 4. Avoid the over-use of heated styling tools, such as tongs and straightening irons, which place strain on the hair and can lead to breakage.
