The Reasons Crash Diets Can Lead to Hair Loss

By Charlene J. Nuble

Hair Loss is a problem that hounds both men and women alike. There are actually many reasons for hair loss to occur, the most common reason is that it was inherited. Genes play a big role in determining whether you are prone to hair loss or not. But aside from this, there are many more reasons like bad habits, harmful hair treatments, skin infections, or even because of hormones. Another important consideration is your diet. Although it is not known by many, crash dieting can actually lead to hair loss.

It is regrettable but nevertheless true, crash dieting has been proven to cause hair loss if prolong for a long period of time. When do suddenly decide to crash diet because of an important event for example, your body would react more violently than you realize. This reaction can cause the abrupt hair loss that would be a bigger problem to you.

The body would react to the sudden loss of nutrients by brutally lessening the nutrients that it feels is not necessary for its survival, one of its targets would be reducing the nutrients for your hair and this in turn will cause the dreaded hair loss. Diets that lack protein that is actually the nutrient for the hair would be the hardest hit by hair loss due to crash dieting.

Also note that the body would divert all the vitamins and minerals in its system to preserve the vital organs that is necessary for survival. During crash dieting therefore, it would stop all the mechanisms necessary for producing hair and it will devote all that it has into preserving your life because it feels threaded by starvation.

There are two phases the hair has. One is the growing phase and the other is the resting phase. Normally, almost ninety percent of your hair is in the growing phase while the remaining ten percent is in the resting phase. The ten percent that is the resting phase is the ones that will start to fall as part of its normal hair cycle so it is typical for you to lose some hair every ones in awhile. However, in crash dieting, an unhealthy amount of hair that is in the growing phase would suddenly shift into the next phase, the resting phase. Hair is pushed into the resting phase by the body so that it can conserve all the nutrients it can. When this occurs, hair loss will follow, and hair loss because of this would be particularly ugly because hair will thin out and ultimately be lost.

In many cases, the result of hair loss from crash dieting is not actually immediate. In fact, this is the reason people are not aware that their hair loss came about from their crash dieting some months ago. Usually, there are two to three months wait before the real consequence of the crash diet would be felt. This is in part because the hair that was in the resting phase previously would fall out as part of its cycle.

You will most likely experience six month of hair loss due to crash dieting and this is if you return to your normal eating habits. The stress that your body feels from starvation also has the possibility of producing a male hormone responsible for the destruction of the hair follicles. When this had already occurred, then your hair will no longer be able to grow as the follicles are gone. Crash dieting for a period of some months is especially not recommended for people who already have the gene that is geared for baldness as this can result to total hair loss that cannot be regained.
